JSON Tree View vs Graph View: Which to Use

Quick answer: A tree view shows JSON as a collapsible, indented hierarchy — best for reading, navigating, and editing data whose shape you already understand. A graph view renders the same data as connected nodes you can pan and zoom — best for understanding the shape of large or unfamiliar JSON and seeing how nested objects relate. Use the tree to work in the data; use the graph to understand it at a glance.

What each view is good at

Both views represent the exact same JSON. The difference is what they make easy.

Tree view

The JSON Tree View lays out keys and values as an indented outline you can expand and collapse branch by branch. It mirrors how the data is written, so it's ideal when you need to:

  • Drill into a specific known path (data.items[3].price)
  • Collapse noise and focus on one branch
  • Search across keys and values and jump to matches
  • Read values precisely, including long strings and exact numbers

Trees scale vertically. A document with 50 sibling keys is a long scroll, but each value stays readable.

Graph view

The JSON Flow / Graph View draws each object and array as a node, with edges connecting parents to children. You pan, zoom, and drag nodes. It's ideal when you need to:

  • Grasp the overall structure of unfamiliar JSON quickly
  • See how deeply nested an API response really is
  • Spot repeated sub-structures and relationships
  • Explain a payload's shape to someone else visually

Graphs scale spatially. Depth and breadth become a picture instead of indentation you have to track in your head.

A practical workflow

The two views are complementary, not competing. A common pattern when you receive an unfamiliar API response:

  1. Open it in the graph view first to understand the overall shape — how deep it goes, where the arrays are, which objects repeat.
  2. Switch to the tree view to drill into the specific branch you care about and read or edit exact values.
  3. If you're comparing two versions of the response, move to the JSON Diff Viewer to see what changed.

When neither is enough

For very large documents, even a graph gets crowded. In that case, reach for the Structure Analyzer to get key counts, type distribution, and maximum nesting depth as plain numbers — a faster way to size up complexity than scanning any visual. Is a graph view better than a tree view for JSON? Neither is universally better. A graph wins for understanding the structure of unfamiliar or deeply nested data; a tree wins for reading and editing specific values. Most real work uses both.

Can I edit JSON in a graph view? Graph views are primarily for exploration. For structured editing without touching raw syntax, use the Visual Editor, then switch to the graph to confirm the shape.
