JSON vs YAML: Differences and When to Use Each

When to choose JSON

- Generated data. When a program produces the output, JSON's strictness is a feature — there's no whitespace ambiguity to get wrong.
- Browser and JavaScript contexts.

When to choose YAML
- Human-edited config. Kubernetes manifests, GitHub Actions, Docker Compose, and Ansible all use YAML because engineers read and write them constantly.
- Files that need comments. Documenting why a setting exists is invaluable in config, and JSON simply can't do it.
- Deeply nested settings where YAML's indentation is easier to scan than nested braces.
The catch: YAML's whitespace sensitivity makes it easy to break with a stray space or tab, and its type coercion has famous gotchas (the "Norway problem," where no becomes false). Avoid generating YAML programmatically when JSON would do.
